Year 5

Meet the teachers

Miss E.HarcupMiss E. Harcup

Hi, my name is Miss Harcup and I am the Year 5 teacher. Having spent many years in Y3, I am excited to get stuck into the Y5 curriculum and developing learning opportunities for my class. I love to engage children in discussion and group work, promoting key social skills and reflective thinking.

When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and going on walks with my partner. I have two mischievous cats who always keep me entertained! I can often be found at my local archery club during the weekend!

I’m Mrs Whittingham and I’m the Year 5 learning support teachers and also Forest School assistant. I love taking the learning outdoors and finding new and exciting adventures in nature.

We believe Year 5 is the year children start to become truly independent learners and really find their individual learning preferences and styles.
What We Teach

The content of the National Curriculum is delivered and built upon with discrete lessons, which allow children to learn the key knowledge and skills they need later in their journey with us.

In writing, we focus on a text for a half term, gleaning fantastic vocabulary and writing structure from expert authors, before using the text as a basis for our own writing.

In maths, we use White Rose to support teaching and learning. We use flashbacks at the start of sessions to recap prior learning and follow the 'I do, we do, you do' structure. We have a range of concrete resources to support our learning.

Our classroom learning is complemented by weekly PE sessions, Forest School sessions and other National Curriculum subjects.

How you can help your child

If your child is in Year 5 you can support their learning by:

  • Practising their weekly spellings
  • Practising all the times tables to help children develop instant recall of all facts up to 12x12
  • Reading every day
  • Giving them opportunities to be independent at home
  • Allowing children to practise basic ICT skills such as typing, editing and presenting work
  • Supporting your child to access their home learning sites: Timestable Rock stars, Maths Seeds, Oxford Reading Buddy and Lexia.
